Twelve Days of Christmas – mindful rituals between the years
Rauhnächte – mindful rituals Between the Years
The Rauhnächte are the 12 nights between December 25th and January 6th – a time considered particularly magical in many cultures. The time between the years, when the old ends and the new has not yet begun. A time of stillness, reflection, and conscious mindful rituals.
What are the Rauhnächte?
The term "Rauhnächte" comes from Middle High German and means something like "rough nights" or "smoking nights." Traditionally, houses and stables were cleansed with incense during these nights – to let go of the old and welcome the new. If you want to learn more about the basics of smudging, you will find everything important on our page Smudging with Incense – Basics.
The 12 Nights and Their Meaning
Each of the 12 Rauhnächte traditionally represents a month of the coming year. The first night (December 25th/26th) stands for January, the second for February, and so on until the twelfth night (January 5th/6th) for December. Many people use these nights for reflection, journaling, and conscious mindful rituals – as a transition from the old year to the new.
Rauhnächte mindful rituals for Home
A Rauhnächte ritual doesn't have to be elaborate. Smudging with Palo Santo, frankincense, or sage. Lighting a candle. Keeping still. Reflecting. That's enough. If you want to make your evenings generally more conscious, you will find many ideas on our page Evening mindful rituals. And if you want to understand the entire winter season as a ritual, you will find suitable inspiration on Winter Well-being Moments.
Smudging During the Rauhnächte
Smudging is the oldest Rauhnächte ritual. Certain resins, herbs, and woods are burned to energetically cleanse rooms and create a clear, quiet atmosphere. Palo Santo for clarity. Frankincense for protection. Sage for cleansing. Our Incense Sticks & Incense Collection offers exactly these varieties – natural, hand-picked, and made for conscious mindful rituals.
Rauhnächte as a Gift
