Ramadan • Home • Cultural respect
Ramadan decorations should support a household's daily life and traditions. Practices differ between families, communities and regions. Start with space, light and practical use rather than a ready-made theme.
Timeless ideas and historical dates
This guide is about reusable decoration. Dates for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr in 2026 and 2025 are kept in the historical archive. The 2027 information page covers the next season.
Keep the important areas practical
The table and iftar
Leave enough room for food, water and guests. A simple runner, small lanterns or place cards can add atmosphere without crowding the table.
A prayer or quiet area
Keep the area clear, calm and well lit. Religious objects need respectful placement; decoration should not make the space harder to use.
Windows and the entrance
Paper stars, moon shapes or a string of lights can mark the season. Use electrical products and outdoor lights only as intended.
A reusable decoration kit
- neutral lanterns or LED lights;
- textiles in two coordinated colours;
- paper moon and star shapes;
- a food-safe bowl for dates or a separate container for small gifts;
- cards for good wishes and gratitude.
Year numbers are optional. Neutral pieces can be rearranged each year rather than replaced.
Make things with children
A simple calendar, paper garland or cards for family and neighbours can accompany the month. Choose age-appropriate tools and supervise scissors, glue, small parts and lights.
Fragrance and open flames
Use fragrance sparingly around food and busy rooms. Never leave candles or incense unattended, ventilate and consider sensitive people, children and animals.
Use religious motifs respectfully
Calligraphy and Quranic verses are not interchangeable patterns. Meaning, spelling and respectful placement should be understood. When unsure, choose a neutral light or nature motif.
From Ramadan to Eid al-Fitr
Many basic pieces can stay in place for the festival. Gifts and table accents depend on family traditions. See the separate Eid al-Fitr guide for the next season.
For practical ideas: tea, the iftar table and hospitality. Existing household pieces are a useful starting point.
