A tea ritual is not just about taste. The feel of the ceramic in your hand, the sound of the water, the sight of the steam, the tone of the light, and the subtle scent in the room together create a more holistic experience. The goal of this second KUMO ceremony is not to overstimulate the senses, but to engage each one in a measured way.
If you are new to the series, you can first read about the basic steps of a personal tea ceremony with a KUMO cup.
Combine Japan Gyokuro Asahi with a blue KUMO cup. The cool-toned cup visually supports the fresh character of green tea. Keep the environment neutral; an open window and natural daylight are sufficient instead of strong scents.
Choose beige or Mixed Clay KUMO for Jasmine Pearls or China Jasmine Superior. If desired, a very light Lime, Basil & Mandarin can be used far from the room. If the candle's scent overpowers the jasmine note of the tea, extinguish the candle.
Japan Bancha Houjicha with its roasted aroma is suitable for a warm evening ritual. Together with Mixed Clay or grey/black KUMO, a woody point of light like Forest Soul can be chosen. Do not place the tea and the scented candle too close to each other.
The Altar der Stille ritual plate gathers candles and small decorations in a safe area separate from the cup. This way, the table looks tidy and the tea's movement area is preserved. A branch, a natural stone, or a small ceramic object is sufficient; too much decoration can distract from the ritual.
Burn candles on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Trim the wick according to manufacturer instructions, keep away from drafts, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Tea water and hot ceramic can cause burns; when filling the cup, keep a safe distance for children and pets.
Which sensory element is most important to you in a tea ritual: the texture of the cup, the scent of the tea, the light, or the silence? Share in the comments.
