A chashaku is a specially shaped bamboo spoon used for measuring matcha powder and is an essential part of every traditional Japanese tea ceremony. It is carved from bamboo and painstakingly bent by hand into its characteristic spoon shape using steam. Unlike a metal spoon, a bamboo chashaku does not accumulate static electricity. This allows the matcha powder to slide almost completely from the spoon into the matcha bowl.
As long as the bamboo spoon doesn't get wet, it can simply be wiped clean with a dry cloth after use. However, if the chashaku gets wet and dirty, it should be rinsed under clear running water without dish soap, wiped with a cotton cloth, and then left to air dry. This prevents the matcha powder from sticking to the bamboo spoon.
