Concrete in interior design: surfaces, properties and care

What is concrete?

Concrete is generally made from cement, water and mineral aggregates such as sand and gravel. The cement reacts with water and binds the mixture. Small decorative castings can use different formulations and surface treatments. The word concrete alone does not prove waterproofing, frost resistance or suitability for food.

Small pores and colour variations

Hand-casting can leave minor air bubbles, colour differences and signs of the process. They may be part of the finish, while deep cracks, chips or loss of function should be assessed separately.

Working concrete into a room

Light grey and white pair with wood and textiles; dark grey gives a stronger contrast on light surfaces. Start with purpose: Sandvika organises desk essentials, Egersund holds a card or photograph, and Giske is for storing small dry items.

Care and restrictions

Place heavy pieces on stable furniture and protect delicate surfaces. Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid acidic and abrasive cleaners. Do not leave standing water unless the maker expressly allows it. Food contact, exposed flames and outdoor use require individual approval.

Is concrete the same as Raysin?

No. Raysin 200 is a calcium-sulfate casting compound; concrete relies on cement. Read our material comparison for further detail.

Sources and limits

The exact manufacturer's product data governs uses and care. Rayher documents Raysin 200; professional concrete references describe cement-based materials. This article is not a product certification.
