Concrete, cast stone and Raysin: differences explained

Why labels matter

Different casting materials can appear equally grey and matte. The marketing term cast stone does not always identify the binder or confirm the intended use. Read the exact product specification.

Concrete

Concrete is fundamentally cement, aggregates and water. Final properties depend on the recipe and surface treatment.

Cast stone

In decorative retail, cast stone may describe several mineral or composite recipes. It does not alone guarantee cement content, waterproofing or food suitability.

Original Raysin 200

Rayher's Raysin 200 is a calcium-sulfate-based casting material mixed with water and allowed to harden. It is not a type of concrete. The manufacturer warns that the material absorbs water and should not remain exposed to moisture.

What does SteinKunstWerk use?

Our own items explicitly identified as Original Raysin 200 are made from that material. Bannik Design describes its products as concrete. Do not interchange the terms. Neither material name certifies a decorative item for direct food contact, water-filled vases, candles or outdoor use.

Cleaning

Follow each item's care advice. Raysin should stay dry; concrete behaviour depends on formulation and finish.

Sources and limits

The exact manufacturer's product data governs uses and care. Rayher documents Raysin 200; professional concrete references describe cement-based materials. This article is not a product certification.
