The right grind size for every preparation method

The quality of a coffee doesn't just depend on the bean. The correct grind also determines whether your coffee tastes clear, bitter, watery, strong, or well-rounded.

  • Coarse: French Press and Cold Brew
  • Medium: Filter coffee, Chemex and many pour-over methods
  • Fine: Espresso, Moka pot and portafilter
  • Very fine: Turkish coffee

7 methods for grinding coffee

1. Mortar and pestle

The traditional method is slow but mindful. Especially for very fine coffee, it can be an almost meditative ritual.

2. Hand crank grinder

A hand grinder offers control and slows down the preparation. It is particularly suitable for coffee rituals because the grinding itself becomes part of the moment.

3. Blade grinder

Fast and simple, but often uneven. Usable for coarse methods, less precise for espresso.

4. Conical burr grinder

Very versatile and ideal for many households. It allows for different grind sizes from filter coffee to espresso.

5. Flat burr grinder

Precise, professional and particularly interesting for espresso enthusiasts.

6. Turkish Grinder

For almost powder-fine coffee and traditional Turkish preparation.

7. Grinding in store

Convenient, but less aroma-stable. Grinding whole beans fresh at home is usually the better choice.
