Baking for the first Advent: Cookies for the pre-Christmas season

The first Advent season is just around the corner, and with it the beginning of the contemplative time of year. The days are getting shorter, the lights are lit in the windows, and the scent of freshly baked pastries fills the air. Baking is simply a part of the Advent season! While many of us enjoy making classic star-shaped cookies, there are many other delicious variations that don't come in the shape of a star. Here are two simple and delicious cookie recipes that are perfect for the first Advent season.

1. Cinnamon stars (but without the star shape!)

Ingredients:

  • 250 g ground almonds
  • 200 g powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 egg whites
  • A pinch of salt

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 150°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff and slowly add the powdered sugar until a glossy mixture forms.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the ground almonds and cinnamon.
  4. Carefully fold the almond-cinnamon mixture into the egg whites.
  5. Form small mounds or balls from the dough and place them on the baking tray.
  6. Bake the cookies in the oven for about 15-20 minutes until they are light golden brown.
  7. Let them cool and enjoy them with a cup of tea or mulled wine!

2. Oatmeal cookies

Ingredients:

  • 150 g oat flakes
  • 100 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 100 g butter (soft)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: chocolate chips or dried fruit

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the softened butter with the sugar and vanilla sugar until creamy.
  3. Add the egg and stir well.
  4. Add the oats, flour, salt and optionally the chocolate chips or dried fruit and mix everything into a smooth dough.
  5. Place small portions of the dough onto the baking sheet – you can also flatten them slightly if you like.
  6. Bake the cookies for about 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let them cool briefly and enjoy these crispy treats!
